Chelsea fell to their third Premier League defeat in four games when they were convincingly beaten 2-0 by Everton at the weekend.
The result sees Mauricio Pochettino’s side slump down to 12th place and already a mammoth 14 points of the top four.
Despite his big-money move in the summer, Nicolas Jackson has struggled to be a reliable source of goals up front.
The Senegalese international has just six league goals this season, with three of them coming in the same game against a nine-man Tottenham.
The Blues’ next best goalscorers are Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling – both with five – and recent reports suggest that Chelsea will try and address this lack of goals when the transfer window reopens next month.
One striker the club have been linked with is Ivan Toney but Merson is unsure whether the Brentford striker will adapt well to life at Stamford Bridge.
‘It is a lot of money. I do think he is a really good player, but he hasn’t been at a top club yet and we are seeing that with David Raya and Moises Caicedo at the moment,’ the former Arsenal player said in his column for Sky Sports.
‘It’s so different playing for Brentford, no disrespect, to playing for Arsenal or Chelsea. There’s so much scrutiny playing for the top clubs.
‘Let’s take the weekend. Brentford lost to Sheffield United. What page was that report on? You hardly heard about it. However, Chelsea lost to Everton and it is headline after headline.’
Arsenal have also been previously linked with a move for Toney with Thomas Frank’s side likely to ask for a mammoth £80million bid to let go of their prized asset.
Another option is Victor Osimhen, with former Blues player Pat Nevin urging the club to consider selling Mykhailo Mudryk to fund a move for the Napoli striker.
