Sheffield United have sacked Paul Heckingbottom after just one win in the Premier League this season with Chris Wilder returning to the club.

United sit bottom of the Premier League with five points from 14 games so far.

United were hammered 5-0 by Burnley on Saturday and Heckingbottom is now the first Premier League manager to be sacked this term.

Blades owner Prince Abdullah confirmed Wilder’s return on Tuesday.

Speaking after United’s defeat to Burnley, Heckingbottom took aim at the club’s hierarchy for deciding to sell Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge after last season’s Championship promotion campaign.

‘I wanted to keep the group together but we couldn’t,’ Heckingbottom said.

‘We couldn’t because of the last few years and the financial implications. If we’d tied them down [on longer contracts] then we probably wouldn’t have sold those players.

‘There wasn’t a desire from the ownership to sell, but a necessity from a business point of view. We’ve been making financial decisions rather than football decisions. Of course that affects me. I didn’t want it to happen.’
