Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has provided an update on Donny van de Beek’s future at the club amid reported transfer interest from Juventus.

Van de Beek is desperate for more game time and recently suggested that he may look to leave in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils were keen to sell the midfielder in the summer after being told by Ten Hag that was unlikely to play any kid of role for United this term.

Van de Beek has since made two appearances for United this season, though, playing a total of 21 minutes – with 19 of those coming in the Carabao Cup.

The Dutchman has tumbled down the pecking order at Old Trafford, even more so following the summer arrivals of Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat.

‘I think Donny has to play,’ Ten Hag said on Friday. ‘In games he was in the squad, so then he had the opportunity, but it was a slow start in the season because he still recovered from physical setbacks.

‘But now he is back and is doing well in the training so, if we can’t give him perspective, I can see that he has to play, for his career, for everything.’

Van de Beek, speaking about his own future last week, said: ‘I need to play on regular basis… if not at Man United, it will be at another club.

‘It’s a healthy ambition. I’m absolutely crazy about football. I make a good living at Man United, but money has never been my motivation.’

Van de Beek joined United for £34.6m plus £4.4m in add-ons from Ajax in 2020 but he has largely struggled, with just two goals and two assists in 62 games.
