It has been a turbulent start to his career with the Red Devils for the goalkeeper, shining at times but also turning in some poor performances, most recently on Wednesday night away to Galatasaray.
The 3-3 draw was a fantastic watch for the neutral, but a frustrating night for United as they tossed away a lead in a match they really needed to win.
Onana had a game to forget, arguably at fault for all three Galatasaray goals and he is under pressure to step up in performance after his high-profile summer move from Inter Milan is yet to live up to expectation.
With his performances not always up to scratch and with the likelihood that he will be called up for Cameroon at AFCON, which runs from 13 January to 11 February, Onana fears that he may not regain his place in the first team when he returns from the tournament in the Ivory Coast.
Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, signed from Fenerbahce over the summer but yet to make a Manchester United appearance, will have the chance to shine when Onana is not around and will hope that his teammate is right in his concern for his place.
Tom Heaton will step up to second choice when Onana is in Africa, and although Red Devils fans are not all convinced by that goalkeeping trio, Erik ten Hag insists he is very happy with them.
‘We are very pleased with the goalkeeper group,’ said Ten Hag. ‘Andre, Altay, Tom, as a group they do really well, they have good performances and they have to push each other.
