The member representing Bende North constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, Nnamdi Ibekwe has cried out that the people of Ugwueke community in Abia State are being allegedly attacked by the people of Akaeze of Ebonyi State over land dispute.
During the said invasions, the lawmaker alleged that many Ugwueke indigenes were murdered or raped by the Akaeze people who also, allegedly dispossessed them of their belongings during each attack.
Ibekwe, who brought the matter to the Abia State House of Assembly as a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, said that some Ugwueke indigenes have either been killed or raped, while their property were destroyed by the Akaeze people between March and September, 2023.
He lamented that the Akaeze people who were allegedly harboured by the Ugwueke people as refugees during the civil war were now attacking their hosts, saying that his constituents have been attacked more than five times this year.
He called on the Abia State House of Assembly to urgently intervene to save the Ugwueke indigenes from further attacks.
Ruling on the matter, the Abia State House of Assembly, presided over by the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, directed its committee on security and boundary matters, to liaise with the deputy governor of the State, who is also, the Chairman of the State’s boundary committee, and report back to the House within 30 days.
Throwing more light on the crises, Eze Gilbert Nwafor-Chukwu of Amaokai Ugwueke, said the Akaeze people whom they sheltered during the civil war, later turned to their enemies, after discovering how fertile Ugwueke lands were.
Nwafor-Chukwu begged the Abia State government and the National Boundary Commission to urgently bring a lasting solution to the land dispute.
