The Police Command in Ogun State says it arrested no fewer than 124 suspects for cultism, armed robbery and other crimes in the last three months.
The State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Eleweran, the state’s Police headquarters.
He said that those arrested included 28 suspected cultists, six armed robbery suspects and 90 others for murder, raping, motorcycle snatching and kidnapping in multiple operations across the state.
The statement read in part, “Our command, in collaboration with other security agencies, have made tremendous progress. We have successfully apprehended a total of one hundred and twenty-four suspects for various offences.
“Additionally, we have discovered through credible intelligence their hideouts, attacked them and their operational weapons confiscated.
“On October 6, 2023, at about 0100hrs, a distress call was received by Area Commander Sagamu from Majestic Royal Hotel that suspected armed robbers invaded and operated in the hotel. Teams of policemen moved to the scene of the robbery and engaged the robbers in a gun duel.
“Two of the armed robbers were fatally wounded by superior police firepower. One Elijah Peter Iliasu ‘M’, age 27yrs, was arrested with gunshot injuries. On interrogation, he confessed to the crime of armed robbery and further stated that all of them that participated in the armed robbery came from Ibadan in Oyo State to perpetrate the dastard act.
“On September 15, 2023, a combined team of Policemen led by Area Commander Sagamu in collaboration with a vigilante group of Nigeria raided some suspected criminal hideouts within Sagamu. During the exercise, sixteen (16) suspects were arrested at Itaoba, Sagamu, in connection with the Murder of one Keshinro Sunday, ‘M” aged 45 years.
“The arrested suspects are, Kehinde Alimi ‘M’, Segun Jimoh ‘M’, Muyiwa Adeyemi ‘M’, Usman Bello ‘M’, Ogbonna Uche ‘M’, Samuel Oladele ‘M’, Abel Mathew ‘M’, Akinsanya Taiwo ‘M’, Alaba Ayeola ‘M’, Opeyemi Isa ‘M’, Yusuf Michael ‘M’, Bukola Akinsanya ‘M’, Jimoh Ajase ‘m’, Gbenga Bakare ‘m’, Femi Odusina ‘m’ and (16) Abiodun Oguntola ‘m’.”
Alamutu identified other suspected cultists as “Damilare Saheed ‘M’, Mayowa Amusan ‘M’, Osinowo Samuel ‘M’, Gbadebo Busayo ‘M’, Adeyemi Michael ‘M’. Samuel Patrick ‘M’, Ojo Habeeb ‘M’, Taiwo Hassan ‘M’, Lawal Abimbola ‘M’ and Olatunji Olaniyi ‘M’.”
He further disclosed that two persons were arrested concerning the murder of one Igwe Monday in the Ilese, Ijebu area of the state, while four suspected armed robbery gangs were arrested in Ewekoro.
“On September 23, 2023, an informant discovered a corpse (later identified as Igwe Monday ‘m’) at Faari express motor park Ilese Ijebu-Ode and informed the Anti-kidnapping unit of the Police at a pin-down point. Upon investigation, the following suspects were arrested in connection to the murder, namely: Ogunsola Oluwatomisin ‘m’ and Odusina Olukunle ‘m’.
“The suspects confessed that one Jonah James, who claimed to have given a vehicle to Igwe Monday to work and who suspected that he had absconded with the vehicle, engaged them to locate and arrest him. However, the suspects intercepted the deceased and beat him to death. His corpse was dumped in a bush near Faari motorpark Ilese-Ijebu. The principal suspect, one Jonah James ‘m’, is on the run. An intensive hunt to apprehend him and other fleeing suspects has been launched. The case is under investigation.
“On 20/09/23, acting on an intelligence gathering, officers from Sango Ota Area Command stormed the hideouts of the following suspected armed robbers at Papalanto, Ewekoro and arrested Ogunleye Abiodun ‘m’, Oladijo Akeem ‘m’, Ibrahim Mukaila ‘m’, Mohammed Sanni ‘m’ and Ali Mohamadu ‘m’.
The suspects have confessed to being members of the armed robbery gang that had robbed and dispossessed one Adeleke Tayo ‘m’ and Adepoju Ola ‘m’ of one Toyota Corolla and one Pontiac Vibe vehicle, respectively. ”
Alamutu noted that various exhibits, including guns, cutlasses, vehicles, mobile phones, live cartridges, sticks, and ropes, among others, were recovered from the suspects.
He disclosed that 13 vehicles and six motorcycles were also recovered in various parts of the state, urging members of the public to visit any of the Police divisions to recover their stolen automobiles.
