Brentford striker Ivan Toney is keen on a move to Arsenal in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Toney, who is currently preparing to return from an eight-month betting ban and has been playing in behind-closed-doors matches, is strongly linked to Arsenal.

The Gunners are not the only club looking to bring in the Englishman, though, with Chelsea also thought to be plotting a bid while Manchester United and Tottenham could also join the race to sign the 27-year-old.

But according to the Daily Mail, Toney is ‘coveting’ Arsenal just as much as the north Londoners are coveting him, meaning the Gunners may be in prime position to land his signature when the transfer window opens up this winter.

They add that Mikel Arteta is taking Arsenal’s goal deficiency ‘very seriously’ and claim that Toney ‘ticks a lot of boxes’ for the Spaniard in terms of his character and physicality, despite the fact that a deal for him may impact summer spending.

It is thought that Brentford want at least £80m to part ways with their star striker, who has registered 68 goals and 21 assists across 124 games for the Bees.

Arsenal have also scouted Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez as potential alternative option, who would cost considerably less than Toney.

Paul Merson, meanwhile, feels Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah aren’t good enough to win Arsenal the Premier League title and has urged his old club to sign Toney.

‘I’ve always said it from day one – Eddie Nketiah is not going to win you the Premier League,’ Merson told Sky Sports. ‘I don’t even think Gabriel Jesus takes them to the next level.

‘Ivan Toney is available for them in January – there aren’t many centre forwards around in the world. They’re a dying breed. Toney is a good player, he can hold the ball up, he’s good in the air. Arsenal might have to go for him.’
