A filmmaker, Emem Isong- Misodi, has announced dates for the maiden edition of the African Cultural Film Festival.
Isong, who also doubles as the director of the festival, stated that it was aimed at positioning the movie industry for the global audience. She said, “Too often, the rich tapestry of African culture is underrepresented or misrepresented in mainstream media and global narratives. This realisation was the spark for Affricuff. With the theme, ‘Thinking Local, Going Global’, we want to discuss how we, as filmmakers, can tell our rich local stories in a way that is appealing to a global audience , without losing our authenticity. This theme also signifies our commitment to bridging the gap between the global audience and African storytellers.
“We believe that by amplifying the voices of African filmmakers and showcasing their extraordinary talents, we can foster a deeper appreciation for African culture, and promote a more accurate and nuanced understanding of this diverse continent. Affricuff is not just a film festival; it is a cultural exchange, and celebration of unity in diversity.”
The festival, which is scheduled to hold from October 26 to 29, 2023, in Houston, Texas, United States of America, will feature screenings in and out of competition, panel discussions, workshops, networking and award ceremony.
According to the organisers, over 50 films, comprising of feature length movies, short films and documentaries, have already been submitted. This is even as winners of the different categories will be decided by a jury, headed by a movie critic and journalist, Shaibu Husseini.
