International human rights organization, Yiaga Africa, on Saturday announced the deployment of a high-level election study mission to the 2023 general elections in Liberia.
The decision followed its accreditation by the National Elections Commission of Liberia.
A statement issued from Moronvia by the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, said the mission was part of its Transforming Electoral Governance in Africa initiative, designed to transform electoral governance through evidence-based learning, documentation, and advocacy.
He said, “Under this project, Yiaga Africa will undertake policy conversations, study missions, and participatory action research on elections and electoral reforms.
“The mission is led by Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, a former Commissioner for Political Affairs at the African Union Commission and former Nigerian Ambassador to Guinea, also a member of the board of Yiaga Africa.”
Other members of the mission included the Chair of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Sharafadeen Alli; Chairman, of the Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon Prince Bayo Balogun; former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Asmau Maikudi; Vice President, Africa at Luminate, Toyin Akinniyi; Chair, Partners for Electoral Reform and Yiaga Africa Board member, Ezenwa Nwagwu and Deputy Country Director of National Democratic Institute
Nigeria, Francis Madugu.
Others are Broadcast journalist of Channels Television Maupe Ogun-Yusuf; Project Coordinator, The Kukah Center, Esrom Ajanya; Africa Head of Operations & Research, Yiaga Africa, Olusegun Ogundare; Africa Program Coordinator, Ibrahim Faruk and Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo.
Itodo said the delegation will interact with key electoral stakeholders in line with the mission’s focal themes, which included election management, electoral technology, election results management and citizen participation.
He said, “At the end of the election, the mission will issue a report on its findings with relevant stakeholders in Liberia and Nigeria on transforming electoral governance and promoting electoral reforms.”
