The Red Devils confirmed on Friday that centre-back Martinez is set for an ‘extended period’ on the sidelines in the latest injury blow to Erik ten Hag, which could reportedly last for up to three months.
The Dutchman is already without several defenders with Sergio Reguilon, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia all currently injured.
According to the Daily Mail, United are trying to get Martinez back fit as soon as possible and after undergoing an operation on his broken metatarsal, he is set for a second round of surgery in a bid to cure the problem.
Martinez first picked up the injury back in April – which ruled him out for 11 weeks – and it has flared up again, with United determined to stop another repeat after he got through games against Brighton and Bayern Munich by taking painkillers.
United lost 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday with a makeshift back four that saw midfielder Sofyan Amrabat deployed as a left-back.
Ten Hag, meanwhile, has hit out at the amount of fixtures his side are being forced to play after various players in his squad picked up injury problems.
Speaking specially about Martinez’s injury on Friday, Ten Hag said: ‘We did a proper diagnosis, in Argentina as well, but now it came out that there was a problem.
‘That’s very sad, for him and the team, because he was not 100 per cent fit. I think it was a big difference the Licha Martinez in the last games and the Licha Martinez we have seen in the first season here.
‘He will add to the team, a really strong contributor to our levels and if already one player drops a level, the team performance will be lower.’
