Ajax’s match against RKC Waalwijk was suspended on Saturday evening after goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was involved in a serious injury that left players in tears.
Waalwijk goalkeeper Vaessen collided with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey after rushing out to claim the ball and was left motionless on the ground in the 84th minute of the Eredivisie game.
Medical staff immediately rushed onto the pitch to treat the 28-year-old with stewards holding sheets around the player while he was attended to.
RKC players were were visibly upset as Vaessen received treatment before being stretched off.
The club wrote on Twitter: ‘Dear RKC members, The match has finally been stopped. As soon as we know more, we will get back to you. Thanks for now and have a good trip home.’
Ajax wrote: ‘The match has been temporarily halted due to an apparently serious medical situation. We are thinking of you, Etienne… This is about more than football. Praying you’re okay, Etienne.’
Ajax had been leading 3-2 when the match was suspended.
