Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has ordered for the immediate payment of outstanding three months salaries of lecturers of Taraba State University, TSU.

The governor gave the order on Monday shortly after he met with the management of the university and leaders of the staff union at the Executive Chamber of the Government House, in Jalingo, the state capital.

It would be recalled that Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, chapter in the institution had last week expressed sadness at the failure of the state government to pay members’ salaries.

Addressing the lecturers as well as representatives of the students union, the governor condemned the threat of imminent strike issued by the TSU ASUU chapter, noting that the outstanding salaries were inherited by his administration.

He observed that addressing the outstanding payment is not only a matter of financial responsibility but a moral obligation to the educators.

The governor who went ahead to acknowledge the contributions of the academic staff in shaping the future of the state through education, explained that he understood the gravity of the challenges confronting the institution.

Rather than seeing strikes as the surest way of addressing grievances, he urged the leadership of the lecturers union to always embrace dialogue as a way of resolving problems confronting the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sunday Bako, applauded the governor for accepting to offset the lecturers three months salaries.

In the same vein, the Chairman of ASUU, TSU Chapter, Dr Mbave Garba, commended the governor for the decision.

The outstanding three months salaries, as gathered by Newspot, are those of July, August and September 2023.
