“From the foregoing, it seemed Mohbad got mixed with the wrong music colleagues who he must have believed would help him grow and glow in the industry. Things seemingly didn’t turn out as he must have planned, as probably, there were some red flags he ignored, some questions he never asked and some guidance he never got. As a young man from a very humble background with a storied past of struggles and sufferings, the only hunger inside of you is to change your fortune and that of your home as quickly as the opportunity presents itself. Mohbad might have been a victim of such desperate ambition that never gives recourse to caution when it seems the wind might leave you behind to your filths. But then, this is where wisdom which is profitable to direct comes to see through opportunities for what they are as some masks as helpful only to find out they are ruinous. “

Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Ayoba, professionally known as Mohbad had his last breath on earth on Tuesday, 12 September, 2023, bringing to a sudden end a 27-year existence on human soil. The young man’s death has continued to send shockwaves not only to the entertainment industry where he was a budding star but across all divides as many resonate with the circumstances surrounding his death that have unceasingly dominated public discourse over time.
Since his tragic death. there have been more than a handful of developments. Right from his quick burial, to his wife, son, dad, mum, record label, and now the autopsy being awaited after the police confirmed the completion of it.
To many as with the late singer’s mum, Mohbad didn’t die a natural death; alluding and affirming that he was killed by his enemies. Upon this, many Nigerians on social media and on the streets have peacefully been seeking justice over the death of the late singer, with the police assuring that the law will run its full course on the demise of Mohbad.
Apparently, the singer who is known for his street-pop artistry actually became more famous after his death with many only coming to identify with him and his songs shortly after he was gone. Reports would unfold that the singer did not have it all smooth with both his life and music career. From not having a united home where both parents lived together in peace and love to going astray as sang in one of his songs, Mohbad’s 27 years on earth can be said to have been a bitter-sweet experience. Reports would also account for his association with a record label alleged to be notorious with clips of how he [Mohbad] was being harassed and assaulted by friends of the label on the spread on social media.
There are also clips of how on several occasions he had cried out on social media to let the world know about the oppression he was facing from the record label but it seemed the cries never fell on listening ears. His [Mohbad] mum, in an emotion-laden video, after the death of Mohbad, recalled how during the last moments of the singer, he shared with her how he alone was forced to drink a liquid substance. The mum also pointed out that since Mohbad’s engagement with the boss of his record label, Mohbad had been incessantly tormented up until his death.
While the autopsy report is expected to divulge in scientific details what could have been the cause of the singer’s death, from the circumstances surrounding his death, there are some lessons to be picked for security and peace of young and talented ones like Mohbad who are definitely splattered across the country
The home is still the bedrock of future leaders
Mohbad, seemingly, had a broken home with his mum reportedly abandoning him and his sister for 15 years. In such length of years, a lot could have happened to a child without a mother. As confessed in one of his songs, he went astray at a time, and perhaps never recovered from it. While his dad might have tried to be a father and a mother at the same time to Mohbad, two heads they say are always going to be better than one, hence, it is important that parents take their existence and essence in a child’s life paramount that nothing should come in between their roles in raising together their children.
Due Diligence before engagement/employment/enrolment
From the foregoing, it seemed Mohbad got mixed with the wrong music colleagues who he must have believed would help him grow and glow in the industry.
There is a likelihood that Mohbad jumped on what was offered to him without due diligence to probe every nuance that comes with it, especially on a long-term projection. This is why it is important that as a young person, you hold on to three things in life;
God – The origin of wisdom
Family – Their experience, love and prayers will guide you
Education – Information and knowledge; without which a man is a puppet to his fellows.
Report to the authorities and follow due course
Days ago, a written petition signed by Mohbad where he detailed harassment and assault from some certain guys who are associates to his record label surfaced on the internet. It was said that the petition was submitted to the Nigerian Police which the Force later confirmed but revealed that Mohbad never showed up to defend his written claims as much as his respondents showed up to clear their names. His respondents would then go ahead to file a counter-petition against Mohbad.
While it is unknown why Mohbad never showed up, many claimed he might have been scared to come face-to-face with his alleged assualters. While that is on the one hand, the law is on another and sadly, won’t be able to help out if its due course isn’t followed.
Therefore, it is important that for every case of assault or harassment reported to the police, ensure that you are present to defend your reports/petition in trust that the authority will go all out to protect you against further attacks as with the intent of reporting in the first instance.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
