Yinka, my Asiwaju, your well scripted and profound piece has attracted me back to this platform.
First of all, I must thank you for this piece which is thought provoking and a straight arrow to the wretchedness of Nigerian present sordid and depressing situation. Without sounding alarmist, I think in all sectors, Nigeria can be regarded as a failed state and it is not difficult to know how we got ourselves into this sorry and unenviable state. The two operatives words that propel us to this sorry pass are ‘indiscipline’ and ‘corruption.’ Apart from civil war, no issue can tear a country asunder and rudderless than these two incubuses. No leader has completely eradicated corruption anywhere in the world but the level can be ameliorated by visionary leaders which unfortunately we don’t have in Nigeria. Our indiscipline too is beyond measure to be tackled by any leader.
I am sorry to say that even President Tinubu with his good intentions cannot bring Nigeria to the promised land with this humongous level of indiscipline and corruption in the country.
Yinka, you suggested ECONOMIC WAR to get Nigeria out of the present Economic doldrums. Do you think any Economic war can succeed in Nigeria with our present indiscipline corruption and socio-political configuration? SIngapore succeeded under Lee Kwe Yuu because there was discipline and zero tolerance to corruption. The same thing in China. The Asian miracle was predicated on zero tolerance for corruption and indiscipline.
I think Nigeria has reached a stage to go back to basis. The present socio-political co figuration is very ideal for a great Nation and in our history we have streak of greatest on very few occasions. These occasions are certainly very few because Nigeria was built of faulty foundation by the British for their own colonial purpose. Nigeria is made up of people with different world view on economics, politics and religion. It is an amalgam that cannot work. If we want Progress we need to be honest with ourselves and tell ourselves the home truth Nigeria at present cannot work and it is wobbling and unable to perform the supposed role as the so called giant of Africa. There is no doubt that size matters, but the size of country does not necessarily determine its greatness. Britain was a small island but once upon a time it controls half of the world.
The time has now come to loosen up the federation called Nigeria. Let each nationality develops at its own pace. This is is not a novel idea but it has not been considered. Chief Awolowo, the visionary had listed the nationalists in one of his book. No matter how many times the cake is ‘bake in the Kitchen’ it will be fritter away with our level of indiscipline and corruption and it dies not matter who does the work in the kitchen.
I am not a pessimist, I am an apostle Dr. Nkrumah who believe in Africa unity but Nigeria with the present configuration cannot make any tangible progress. We need to unbundle the country for it to make any appreciable progress.
Yinka, thank you for your presentation which gave me food for thought this morning. It was an appetising menu.
