Over 1576 youths serving various jail terms in Jigawa – Commissioner

The Jigawa State government has said over 1576 inmates out of 1718 total number of inmates serving various jail terms are youths.

State Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Musa Aliyu stated this in an interview with newsmen on Saturday.

He expressed the government’s concern over the high number of youths serving various jail terms in the State.

Mr. Adam said it’s alarming that out of the 1,718 inmates in the State, 1,576 were youths between the ages of 18 to 45.

The commissioner explained that the Jigawa State government is committed to repositioning and reforming the State judiciary for effective service delivery.

According to him “the four-point agenda, designed for the state’s Judiciary Reforms includes reviewing the setup of correctional centers.

“Some of the State’s laws will also be reviewed to tally with modern days, and law for the Administration of Criminal Justice will be implemented in collaboration with all security agencies and other critical stakeholders.

“A committee of Monitoring and implementing administration of Criminal Justice and other related matters will be established”

“Also Anti-Corruption Commission will be established; public enlightenment and engagement will also be emphasized,” he stated.

He solicited the support of legal professionals, retired judges, academicians, international partners, civil societies, religious and traditional leaders, and the general public to achieve the desired goals.
