Liverpool star Andy Robertson admitted he apologised to his Scotland team-mates after ‘letting the team down’ in their defeat to England.
The Scots were beaten 3-1 by their arch rivals at Hampden Park after goals from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.
Foden’s opener was deserved after a period of good pressure but Gareth Southgate’s side were gifted their second.
It came when Robertson’s poor touch inside his own box fell to Bellingham, and the Real Madrid star smashed home.
Scotland put up a spirited response in the second half and they halved the defecit when Harry Maguire turned the ball into his own net.
But Kane was on hand to finish off the match and Robertson says he’s ‘kicking himself’ after an error that saw him apologise to his teammates.
‘The second goal is completely my fault,’ he said.
‘Obviously that can’t happen. But you take it on the chin and try and react and in the second half we got ourselves back in the game.
‘We had a couple of half chances, the crowd were up and then we gave Harry Kane half a yard and he put the game to bed.
‘I hate letting this team down and that’s what I’ve done tonight. I hate costing goals and I just didn’t quite expect the ball to land at my feet and it has just fallen to him.’
He continued: ‘And when you’re coming up against Bellingham with the form he’s in, he’s not going to let you get away with it.
‘I had to apologise to the team and the manager. I did that and I just tried to have a positive reaction in the second half and I think I’ve done that but obviously I’ll be kicking myself tonight.’
