Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Nyesom Wike, after he visited collapsed building in Abuja has re affirmed his earlier decision to demolish houses built on illegal land and wrong locations in FCT.
In a dramatic turn of events, the Minister appeared at the site of a building that collapsed in Garki II, Abuja, on Thursday.
The building, collapsed at approximately 10 p.m. on Wednesday, involved a two-story structure housing numerous bustling business centers.
The former Rivers governor has threatened to demolish houses built at the wrong locations in Abuja, even if the owners of such structures were ministers or ambassadors.
The former Rivers governor issued the threat on Monday 21 August during a press briefing held shortly after Wike and 44 others were sworn in as ministers in Abuja following their appointments by President Bola Tinubu.
He said that his task was to return the capital territory to what it used to be, rather than as a witch-hunt against anyone.
In a press conference conducted amidst the wreckage on Thursday morning, Minister Wike emphasized his prior stance on unauthorized constructions within the nation’s capital.
The collapse of the building further fueled his conviction that stringent measures were necessary to safeguard the city’s structural integrity.
Wike’s address to the gathered reporters underscored the urgency of his mission: “This is precisely our point: any edifice lacking the requisite approvals will face demolition. Our intentions are not rooted in animosity towards anyone; rather, we advocate for adherence to established protocols. The right thing must be done.”
