Chelsea made a key error in their £35m bid to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace – with the reasons for the deal collapsing starting to emerge.

It was reported that Chelsea were set to sign the 21-year-old after activating a £35m release clause in his contract.
But the deal fell through and Olise ended up signing a new four-year deal with the south Londoners instead.
Palace were furious with Chelsea’s conduct and even considered taking legal action.
It has now come to light that there were certain conditions over Olise’s release clause which were not met by Chelsea.
According to The Athletic, the release clause could not be triggered directly by another club and needed to be triggered by Olise himself.
Chelsea knew Olise had the £35m release clause but it is thought that there were not aware that it needed to be triggered by the player.
Had the deal gone ahead, it would have cost Chelsea more than £35m, with that figure ‘the minimum net fee’ that Palace were guaranteed to receive.
As per the conditions of the release clause, Palace would have needed to agree a fee with Olise in order to sell him, and he would have passed that information on to Chelsea to see whether or not they were willing to pay it.
But Chelsea were unaware of this and directly made the bid to Palace, which they ignored before the Eagles agreed a contract extension with the winger.
It is not known whether or not the release clause exists in Olise’s new contract, but it seems that he will not be leaving Selhurst Park this summer.
