England are now just hours away from the biggest game in their history – the final of the Women’s World Cup against Spain.

This is the first time the Lionesses have ever contested the World Cup showpiece but they have recent experience of playing in a major final having emerged victorious at Euro 2022 on home soil last year.

Standing in the way of Sarina Wiegman’s squad of 23 heroes is a talented Spain side who are widely regarded as being technically superior to England.

The Spaniards, who have overcome internal squad strife to reach the final, are expected to dominate possession in Sydney and can count on two of the finest players in the world in Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas.

Despite no promise of a bank holiday if the team brings football home, the country have donned their England shirts and are waiting with baited breath for kick-off at 11am with millions of fans expected to tune-in in what is truly a national event.
