Residents and commercial drivers plying the Ijora Road in the Apapa-Iganmu Local Government Area of Lagos State are lamenting the bad state of the road and the traffic gridlock being caused by the indiscriminate parking of trucks on the road connecting Apapa and Idumota.

Some of the residents lamented the daily hardship they had been facing on the road.

Our correspondent who visited the area on Tuesday noticed potholes on the road and further observed that the rainy season had worsened the situation.

Our correspondent also noticed the trucks parked on the road and how motorists had difficulty navigating their way.

A resident simply identified as Anjola, in an interview, said residents always had harrowing experiences on the road during the rainy season.

She said, “Ijora Road is bad. The bad state of the road causes accidents, especially due to the trucks. When it rains, the road becomes bad and it has affected our source of livelihood and also the vehicles that pass the area.

“The road has been damaged for a long time. Truckers do not help the matter because they keep obstructing and damaging the road that we the residents are managing.”

A driver identified as Ayodele described the state of the road as deplorable.

He added that men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, policemen and soldiers were trying their best to ease the traffic.

Ayodele said, “Ijora Road is not good, including Apapa Road. Commercial bus drivers are complaining. The trucks also contribute to the bad road but there are officials such as the police, LASTMA and soldiers who usually control the traffic.

“The road on the bridge is a bit damaged but it is better compared to the road under the bridge because the abandoned trucks on the bridge have been moved under the bridge.”

Contacted, the Director of Information, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Mrs Maryam Sanusi, asked our correspondent to get across to the Federal Ministry of Works.

“Have you been speaking to the Federal Ministry of Works? Please, get in touch with them to get their reaction,” Sanusi said.
