The Banyana Banyana Girls of South Africa in the wee hours of Sunday lost the opportunity to a record of advancing into the quarterfinal as the team bowed 0-2 to the Orange Girls of Netherlands at the Allianz Stadium.

Netherlands opened scoring under 10 minutes as a second corner kick neatly sent to the head of Beerensteyn was not a neat save by Goalkeeper of South Africa and Manchester City’s Jil Roord poked it home in the 9th minute for the first goal. Roord scored a brace against Vietnam in the 7-0 drubbing and also scored in the 1-1 draw with USA.

A second goal came in the 56th minute for Netherland but was cancelled by VAR. However, Martens got a pass from Pelova’s interception of a South African free kick and found Lineth Beerensteyn who scored the recognized second goal in the 68th minute.

South Africa missed the services of Seyong Sporttoto Forward, and Mamaelodi Sundown player, Karabo Dhlamini who both got knocks along the line.

Netherland started with a slim 1-0 win over Portugal on 23rd July; played 1-1 with USA on 27th July and banged out Vietnam 7-0 on 1st August to get to the Round of 16.

South Africa bowed to Sweden 2-1 on 24th July; played 2-2 with Argentina on 28th July and shocked out Italy 3-2 to place 2nd in group G.

There were 12 meetings between Netherland and South Africa though they were both meeting at the world cup for the first time. Ned won 8 matches and South Africa won 4. In some of them, Ned won 2-0 on 7th June 2016; won again 2-1 on 19th January 2019 and Ned walloped South Africa 5-1 on 12th April 2022.

Netherlands won their previous world cup match against African team beating Cameroon 3-1 in 2019 at the group stage. South Africa lost three of their four games against European sides in this world cup except against Italy.

Netherland are in their third time knockout stages at the world cup in three appearances losing in R16 in 2015 1-2 to Japan but won over Japan same 2-1 on the way to the final in 2019.

Tomorrow Monday 7th August, The Super Falcons of Nigeria will take on the Lionesses of England in another Round of 16 Matches at the Lang Stadium in Brisbane at 0830 hours with 36 year old Finance Graduate, Honduras Referee, Melissa Borjas as the Centre Ref. She gave four yellow cards in the match between Germany and Columbia played on 30th July which ended 0-2 and six yellows in the Italy 1 versus Argentina 0 match of 24th July.

At 1130 hours also tomorrow, co-hosts Australia shall trade tackles with Denmark in another Round of 16 matches at the Stadium Australia. Swiss Ref, Rebecca Welch shall be in charge of the match.
