Nigerian singer, Kingsley Okorie, one-half of the well-known Nigerian highlife group, The Cavemen, has spoken candidly about his professional aspirations.
Speaking on the most recent episode of The Nancy Isime Show with his brother and bandmate Benjamin Okorie, he explained why, despite being licensed to practice law, he decided to pursue music professionally.
He claimed that his first love has always been music and after graduating from law school he chose to pursue a career in music alongside his brother Benjamin rather than pursue a legal career.
Unlike his brother, Benjamin said, he chose to attend a music school rather than the university.
“He [Kingsley] went to the university, I refused to go to the university. I went to a music school, studied music for two years. Then we now came back together.
Kingsley inferred, “After law school, I came back to the house and I told my brother, ‘Yo, in law school while I was going to a civil litigation class, I thought about it cause I was in Kano, I’m away from Lagos and Abuja where I would get gigs, so I think I’m in a cave. I think I’m a caveman.’ And my brother was like, yeah that is the name.”
Benjamin added, “I have been playing the drum since I was 2. I failed WEAC, I told my mum that I want to go to the music school and she said okay. The firstborn [Kingsley] is pursuing his law career as being the firstborn so there was no pressure on me which was perfect to do what I really love. And that is what we are using to feed the family now.”
