Delta State Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, has challenged students to shun cultism and other social vices that could destroy their future.

Speaking when members of the National Association of Delta State Students Union (NADESSTU), led by their national president, Monday Whiska, paid him a congratulatory visit in his office in Government House, Asaba, he encouraged them to take their studies seriously.

While encouraging them to prepare for a better future using education as a platform, he emphasised that youths should take their studies seriously, no matter the condition they may find themselves in while in school.

According to him, the pursuit of education laurels may not be easy, but in the end, it prepares the individual for a better future.

“We know that for us to escape from poverty and all other forms of backwardness in this country and particularly in our state, we do not have any other choice than to be educated.

“It is only an educated person who can appreciate certain things. For instance, if you are not educated, there are a lot of things that you will never understand and appreciate; with proper education and enlightenment, all forms of superstitious belief will be things of the past,” he said.

Onyeme assured members of NADESSTU that the state government led by Gov Sheriff Oborevwori would always give priority attention to education in the state.

He said: “We will do everything to encourage students that are in institutions of higher learning to succeed; I want every one of you to know that going to school is the only way forward for our future.

“Things may be difficult today, but I can assure you that all these are temporary, and an educated person will always find a way out.”

Earlier, Whiska commended the deputy governor for his philanthropic disposition, especially his education fund, which had helped a lot of Deltans in their educational pursuits.

He said that through Onyeme’s encouragement and his involvement in the sponsorship of education activities, most students were propelled to campaign for and stand behind the PDP during the elections.
