Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has appealed to organised labour to reason with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government that its decision to remove fuel subsidy was for the good of the country.
The governor’s plea comes in the wake of the protest embarked upon by organised labour in the state in solidarity with the national leadership on Wednesday to draw the attention of the federal government to the current economic hardship and the high cost of living supposedly imposed on citizens by the new administration following the removal of subsidy on petroleum.
Newspot reports that members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) were sighted across the highways in the metropolis carrying placards with different inscriptions.
Gov Mohammed urged labour unions to support the FG’s decision despite the hardship it has caused.
He made the plea while inaugurating the caretaker chairmen of 20 local government areas in the state at the multi-purpose indoor hall on Wednesday.
His words: “These are hard times arising from the removal of subsidy. Certainly, it is bringing a lot of pain to Nigerians, but we urge our organised labour to understand that this is for good.
“We have bought into the federal government’s initiative to remove the subsidy because we believe it was a waste that wasn’t helping the common man.”
The governor disclosed that his administration has taken measures to ameliorate the suffering of the masses in the aftermath of the subsidy removal.
“We have introduced a subsidy on transportation; we have bought fertilisers, and we have fertilisers. Even civil servants are being given fertiliser on loan, and we are going to key into the federal government’s initiative of bringing fertiliser and other grains. When they are brought to Bauchi, be rest assured that there shall be justice and equity in the distribution,” he said.
