Bayero University, Kano, has revealed plans to purchase bicycles for its staff as a palliative to cushion the effect of hikes in transportation fares due to the removal of petroleum subsidy.
The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, stated this during the University’s 56th Congregation Meeting on Saturday, July 22, 2023.
According to him: “The university is negotiating to purchase bicycles for its junior staff to help them cushion the effect of a hike in transportation fares.
“On many occasions, I witnessed staff trekking from the old campus to the new campus, a distance of almost 10 kilometres.”
The vice chancellor said the university has allocated millions of naira to the university’s cooperatives committee to purchase foodstuffs and distribute them to the staff at a non-interest rate payable in six months.
“Staff can access soft loans at any time, and they will be revolving so that staff who face financial challenges can have money at any time they want.
“There is also an arrangement with the Kano State government to provide buses that will transport students and staff from specified destinations to the university campuses and take them back at affordable rates,” the vice chancellor stated.
