The England captain has been the subject of two bids from Bayern Munich this summer, both of which have been rejected by Tottenham.
The 29-year-old has a year left on his deal in north London and he’s intimated that he will not sign an extension.
Tottenham therefore risk losing their talisman on a free in 2024, or for an even reduced fee in the January transfer window.
Manchester United held exploratory talks with Tottenham at the start of the summer to ascertain if Kane was available.
The message from Spurs was that he would not be sold and, in any case, the club value him at more than £100m.
Whether that was simply a bargaining position remains to be seen and it’s likely that Spurs would be more willing to deal with a foreign club, rather than losing Kane to a Premier League rival.
But Rooney believes Kane is ‘ideal’ for United and says he should leave Spurs this summer.
‘I thought it was time to go last season and he stayed,’ Rooney told the Athletic.
‘Harry’s probably feeling that and knows there are trophies out there for him to win. He has done everything he can for that to try and be at Tottenham.
‘Now probably is right for him to move on and it looks like ready for that as well, but we know Tottenham can be quite difficult at times.’
