The 27-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils and will replace David De Gea as the club’s first choice after his release at the end of June.
Onana worked under Erik ten Hag for three years at Ajax and he’s set to leave Inter after just 12 months at the San Siro.
The former Barcelona academy product couldn’t turn down the chance to move to Old Trafford and after having one bid rejected, The Athletic say Inter have accepted United’s follow-up offer of £43.9m.
That could rise to around £46m with a series of add-ons.
United are yet to decide whether Onana will complete his medical in the north-west or elsewhere.
The club fly out to the United States for their pre-season tour on Wednesday and Ten Hag wants Onana to arrive either with the rest of the squad, or later that day.
It could mean Onana completes his medical in northern Italy before boarding a flight to the east-coast.
The deal will take United’s summer spending past the £100m mark, leaving Ten Hag with just £20m of his £120m budget left.
United hope to offload the likes of Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams, Alex Telles and Anthony Elanga to raise funds.
The likes of Fred and Scott McTominay could also leave, while Harry Maguire is available for around £40m.
