Carlos Alcaraz has warned Novak Djokovic that he firmly believes he can beat the seven-time Wimbledon champion in Sunday’s final.
World No.1 Alcaraz beat third-seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Friday to reach the first Wimbledon final of his career as he bids to lift a second major title.
But standing in his way is 23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic, who cruised past Jannik Sinner in the other semi-final clash.
Djokovic beat Alcaraz when the pair met in the last four of the French Open last month but the young Spaniard, who admits his father has been filming the Serbian’s training sessions, feels he has what it takes to shock the 36-year-old.
‘Everybody knows the legend he is,’ Alcaraz about Djokovic in his on-court interview after eliminating Medvedev.
‘It’s going to be really, really difficult but I will fight. I will believe in myself that I can beat him here.
‘He is unbeatable since 2013 on this court (Centre Court) so it’s going to be a really tough challenge for me, but I am ready for this.
‘I dream… since I started to play tennis, to play a final (at Wimbledon). It’s even more special against Novak.
‘It’s a final. It’s not time to be afraid; it’s not time to be tired. I will go for it and let’s see what happens.’
Alcaraz also spoke about Djokovic in his post match press conference as he added: ‘I think it’s more special to play a final against a legend from our sport. Well, if I win, it could be amazing for me – not only win a Wimbledon title but do it against Novak would be super special.
‘But I always say if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. Novak is one of them. Would be great if I’ll do it. Novak has no weakness, so it’s going to be really tough to find a way to be dangerous for him.
‘Right now is not the time to think about it. I will have time tomorrow, the day off before, to prepare the match. I talked with my team. We will find the way to beat Novak. For me, it’s going to be the best moment of my life I think.’
Djokovic lost his cool during his semi-final win over Sinner on Friday, hitting out at the crowd and being handed both a hindrance violation and time violation.
