Erik ten Hag played a crucial role in Manchester United’s impending signing of Chelsea star Mason Mount.

The 24-year-old is currently undergoing a medical ahead of putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at Old Trafford.

Chelsea rejected three offers from United for Mount but eventually agreed to a £55m deal, which could rise to £60m if the midfielder is successful at the Theatre of Dreams.

The Blues felt they had little option but to sell after Mount intimated he would not sign a new deal at the club.

With 12 months left on his contract, Mount attracted interest from across the Premier League.

Arsenal and Tottenham were both keen on Mount but the main competition to United’s deal came from arch rivals Liverpool.

After pulling out of a move for Jude Bellingham, Jurgen Klopp made signing at least two midfielders a priority.

Klopp felt Mount would be a perfect addition, given his tactical flexibility, age, experience and ability to press from the front.

However, Sky Sports say Mount was ‘wowed’ by Ten Hag’s knowledge of his game and the level of appreciation that the Dutchman showed for his ability.

After a difficult 12 months at Stamford Bridge, Ten Hag will be hoping to get Mount back to his best.

Mount is said to ‘tick all the boxes’ that Ten Hag is looking for, particularly when it comes to the demands that he places on his players without the ball.

The midfielder could make his debut for the club against Leeds United in Oslo next week.

Ten Hag will then look to sign a goalkeeper and a striker, though he will need to raise funds through player sales in order to sign his top targets.
