Wimbledon has returned for 2023 – but fan favourite Roger Federer will not be amongst the players gracing the hallowed turf of SW19.

The Swiss tennis legend hung up his racquet after a stunning 24-year career at the top end of the sport, during which he secured a whopping 20 Grand Slam titles.

But exactly when did he call time on his playing career?

Here is when Roger Federer retired from professional tennis.

The decision came on the back of his struggles with a persistent knee injury – not surprising given he was over 40 when he decided to call time on his illustrious career.

Federer said last year: ‘The past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.

‘I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form.

‘But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years.

‘Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career.’

He played his last ever tennis match at the Laver Cup later that month, playing doubles alongside rival-turned-friend Rafael Nadal for Team Europe.

Roger Federer last played at Wimbledon in 2021.

The 6-3, 7-6, 6-0 defeat to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals was actually the final ever singles match of his career.

He won Wimbledon a record eight times in his career, with his last triumph coming back in 2017.

The eight victories are part of the 20 Grand Slams Federer won, making him the third most successful tennis player of all time behind Novak Djokovic (23) and Rafael Nadal (22).
