Gunmen have shot dead two persons in the Ubeta-Owube axis of Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The victims, identified as Confidence Chiadikobi Franco and the driver of the commercial vehicle they were travelling in, were killed when they were ambushed by the gunmen on Saturday.

According to Major Elleh, an indigene of the Ubarama community, the driver of the vehicle and the owner of the building materials were on their way to Owube.

Elleh, a former community development committee chairman of Ubarama, told Newspot: “We learnt from reliable sources that the two victims were shot at about 11 pm in Owube, a neighbouring community, about one kilometre away from Ubarama. One of the victims is Confidence Chiadikobi Franco, who lived in Port Harcourt.

“His father’s house was brought down during the flood, and he bought some building materials for the house. And he was gunned down with the driver by these hoodlums along Ubata.”

Elleh called on stakeholders and the Local Government Council Chairman to give the necessary support to the new Divisional Police Officer and other security agencies in the area to clamp down on criminal elements.

“I believe the new DPO is an active man with a track record. And I have the belief that he’s going to do his work very well,” he said.

The Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the killings in Ahoada West and assured that an investigation is ongoing to arrest the hoodlums.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Nwonyi Polycarp-Emeka had, upon assumption of office, redeployed the DPOs of Akinima Police Division and Ahoada Police Division in Ahoada West and East LGAs, respectively.

The new DPOs were supposedly appointed as a strategy to reduce cult-related activities and other criminal activities in the area.
