Mauricio Pochettino is pushing for Chelsea to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, according to reports in Spain.

Chelsea are looking to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season and have Brighton’s Moises Caicedo as one of their top targets.

Pochettino is also set to see several midfield departures this summer with Mateo Kovacic likely to join Manchester City, while N’Golo Kante is finalising his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. Manchester United are also continuing with their bid to sign Mason Mount, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also expected to depart.

Relevo reports that Chelsea are in the race to sign Veiga from Celta Vigo but they are facing strong competition from Liverpool.

However, the report claims that Pochettino has personally taken steps to convince Veiga to move to Stamford Bridge as he has contacted the midfielder’s representatives to make Chelsea’s interest known.

Celta Vigo narrowly avoided relegation from La Liga last season but Veiga was one of their standout performers with 11 goals and four assists.

Veiga still has three years remaining on his contract with the Spanish club but his deal includes a €40m (£34.4m) buyout clause.

Chelsea also remain in talks with Villarreal to Villarreal forward Nicolas Jackson.

It’s understood that personal terms have been agreed with the 22-year-old and Chelsea are now weighing up whether to trigger his €35 million (£29.8m) release clause.
