A Non-Governmental Organisation, Zhero Tolerance for Social Immoralities-Africa, has petitioned NEM Insurance Plc over an alleged refusal to pay one of its clients’ claim.

Nem Insurance however said the claim was still under investigation and a decision had not been taken or communicated to the insured.

The group in a statement issued by its Director, Special Project, Abdullahi Shinkafi, said the client had procured a N12m automobile insurance policy from Nem Insurance Plc for his vehicle in the event of any loss.

“The client’s vehicle, a Toyota Avalon Car, had an accident that involved his private driver Mr Olabimtan Shina, but Nem Insurance rather than fulfilling its obligation of insurance policy, resorted to needless harassment and vilification of the driver by security agencies,” he stated.

While alleging that the underwriting firm refused to pay, he said, “We at ZHETSI-AFRICA have resolved to petition the following agencies NAICOM, NHRC, FCCPB, and other internationally recognised insurance bodies.”

Reacting to the allegation in a statement, The Company Secretary/Legal Adviser, Nem Insurance Plc, Olajumoke Philip-Akede, said, “We are aware of the recent allegations made against our company regarding our client’s claim for a motor accident and can confirm that the insured (Mr Adewunmi Adewale) has an  active  motor  insurance  policy  with  us  which  will  expire  6th October  2023.

“We understand the frustration and concern that such situations can cause and want to assure the public that we take all claims seriously.

We would however like to clarify that the claim is still under investigation by the  Nigeria Police Force, and our client is aware of this.

“We are yet to receive a report on the outcome of  their  findings  which  will  guide  us  in  taking  a  decision  on  the  claim  in  line  with  the insurance contract with our client.”

The underwriting firm added that, “We pride ourselves on providing quality services and payment of genuine claim and are committed to upholding the highest ethical and professional standards in all our operations.”
