Tottenham rehiring Mauricio Pochettino as manager would be a terrible move, reckons Jamie Carragher, who believes it would end up like Kevin Keegan’s return to Newcastle.
Pochettino is one of a number of candidates in the frame to replace Antonio Conte when the Italian inevitably leaves Spurs.
Whether Conte stays till the end of the season and leaves in the summer or is gone before then, it currently seems extremely unlikely that he will be in charge for the next campaign after their limp exit from the Champions League this week.
The likes of Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Frank and Steve Cooper have been touted as replacements, but many Spurs fans would like to see Pochettino return to the job he left in 2019.
Carragher, though, does not think that would be a good idea and can only see failure ahead for the Argentine if he returned to north London.
Although very different circumstances, Carragher believes it would be the same result as when Keegan returned to Newcastle in 2008 after his memorable stint in charge in the ’90s. The return was not glorious.
Carragher wrote in the The Telegraph: ‘Never go back. That is what they say in football. Mauricio Pochettino would be wise to remember that.
‘The fact reappointing Pochettino is under consideration is a damning indictment on how Spurs have operated since he left,’ the former Liverpool defender wrote in The Telegraph.
‘Going back would be an acknowledgement of the mistake sacking him. He would have to restart in north London, and every setback would inevitably lead to comparisons to when he initially took over.
‘They must know how rarely old magic is recreated in football… Pochettino returning to Spurs would be like Kevin Keegan going back to Newcastle United.
‘Like Keegan’s Newcastle in the mid-Nineties, Pochettino’s Tottenham charmed neutrals without winning trophies.’
Conte remains in charge for now and his Spurs side host Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.
