The Nigeria Labour Congress, Bayelsa State chapter, on Monday elected a new chairman, Simon Barnabas.

Barnabas emerged through a harmonised process during the seventh quadrennial state delegates conference held at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, Yenagoa.

Also, a former state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, John Angese, emerged as the state sectretary of the NLC.

The state new NLC chairman takes over from his predecessor, John Ndiomu.

Barnabas said he was elated by his emergence, adding that he was aware of the huge responsibility placed on him as a labour leader.

He said that he would build on the legacies left behind by his predecessor while ensuring that all workers were given a sense of belonging.

Barnabas said, “We know that taking care of the affiliate unions of the NLC in Bayelsa is not an easy task just as I saw my predecessor doing. By God’s grace, we will continue as we have inherited the legacies he handed over to us.

“We will try as much as we can to ensure that labour activities are held and our teeming members will feel the essence of belonging to labour movement. This is my assurance to my members.”

He advised workers to be orderly and committed to their work in order to reap the fruits of their labour.

In his remarks, the chairman of the NLC Election Planning Committee, Kalizibe Joseph, explained that the panel decided to adopt harmonization method, which the national body also used, in order not to heat up the polity and avoid acrimony.

“Election fallouts cause disaffection among contestants and to avoid that we decided to adopt the harmonization method just like the national (body)”, he said.
