The Red Devils won 2-0 at Wembley against Newcastle with both goals coming in rapid succession in the first half, securing the first silverware of Erik ten Hag’s reign in the process.
Casemiro opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark, diverting a superb header into the far corner after a devilish cross from Luke Shaw.
A slick transition a few minutes later then produced the game’s second goal, with the in-form Marcus Rashford played in down the left-hand side of the box and his shot taking a big deflection off Sven Botman to fly past Loris Karius.
In truth, Newcastle created little of note after that and United ground out the victory with relative ease – though they did spurn a golden opportunity to add a little extra gloss to the scoreline.
In the 93rd minute, with the Magpies pushing forward in numbers, United were able to spring a counter which saw Joe Willock have to chase back as the last man as Fernandes, Sancho and Scott McTominay all raced towards the goal.
Fernandes had the ball on the right side of the pitch and ignored an early opportunity to square the ball for Sancho, who was in acres of space.
Instead, the Portuguese playmaker carried the ball into the box, chopped inside past Willock and then saw his effort saved by Karius as a wide open Sancho threw his arms out in frustration.
After the game, Sancho was in charge of a selfie stick to film United’s celebrations and he could not resist bringing up his team-mate’s selfishness when he bumped into Fernandes.
‘Hey, next time you pass huh,’ said the England international as Fernandes kissed him on the cheek, with the midfielder taking it in good jest and replying: ‘Next time, next time!’
Casemiro had not seemed best pleased with Fernandes for not passing either and made a bee-line for his team-mate after the full-time whistle was blown at Wembley.
The Brazilian appeared to gesture that Fernandes should have passed, while the midfielder defended himself and felt he had to shoot, but the two quickly started and laughing and joking with each other before joining back in with the trophy celebrations.
