Max Verstappen has named the two drivers he would pick to race for him if he had his own Formula One team.

The two-time champion is currently gearing up for the 2023 season which gets underway on March 5th, with pre-season testing in Bahrain set to begin on Thursday.

There are plenty of changes to the grid this year with six of the 10 teams changing their driver line-ups, though naturally there is plenty of debate over which team has the best pairing.

And Verstappen has now had his say, picking the two racers and team principal he would want if the Red Bull star was in charge of his own outfit – and his choices may raise some eyebrows.

‘Can I choose anyone, outside of myself of course? Because I can’t be the team boss and the driver? It’s not possible? I’m just kidding,’ Verstappen jokingly told Mobil 1 The Grid.

‘Well, of the current people who are capable of being the team principal I would go for Christian [Horner].

‘I find that really hard, the drivers, because I think there are a lot of good drivers. And I would go probably for an experienced one. So I would go for Fernando [Alonso].

‘And then I would take a young guy and I would put Lando [Norris] in the car. Yeah, Fernando and Lando.’

Two-time champion Alonso and McLaren star Norris are two of the highest-rated drivers on the 2023 car so his choices make complete sense, and it’s a line-up many fans would probably like to see.

Norris and Verstappen’s have been friends for a long-time also, having come up through karting together and the British racer has been linked with a move to Red Bull to partner the Dutchman in the past.

That said, he has snubbed any of his former teammates from Red Bull and Toro Rosso, namely Carlos Sainz Jr., Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez.

Perhaps most notably, his rival Sir Lewis Hamilton is not included despite many considering the seven-time champion to be the greatest F1 driver of all-time.

One shouldn’t read too much into this though given that while the pair did contest a fierce battle for the 2021 title, they have spoken a lot about their respect for one another.
