Robbie Savage believes Manchester United will be Premier League title favourites if they sign Harry Kane and Frenkie de Jong this summer.

United have made major strides under Erik ten Hag this season, competing on four fronts and just five points adrift of Manchester City and Arsenal at the summit of the Premier League.

Signing a new striker is expected to be a top priority for the club this summer with Tottenham star Kane one of the options under considerations at Old Trafford along with Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos.

United spent much of last summer chasing a deal for Barcelona star de Jong and ten Hag remains interested in a reunion with the midfielder in Manchester following their success together at Ajax.

United are currently in takeover talks with a ‘soft’ deadline for submitting initial offers set at 10pm on Friday night.

With hopes the new owners can bankroll some ambitious summer transfer plans, Savage believes Kane and de Jong are the ‘missing pieces’ who can transform United into champions.

‘Add Harry Kane and Frenkie De Jong to this Manchester United squad and Erik Ten Hag could be presiding over front-runners for the title next year,’ Savage wrote in his column for The Mirror.

He continued: ‘If they bring in two key players in the summer, when there may be a generous budget if a takeover has happened at Old Trafford, and United are going to challenge for the Premier League crown next season.

‘I would try to sign Kane, who would have pace either side of him up front, and go back to Barcelona for De Jong – who Ten Hag tried so hard to buy last summer.

‘With De Jong and Casemiro’s ball retention in midfield, and Kane doing what Kane does best up top, for me those are the missing pieces of a title-winning side.

‘So make a date with May 2024 – because if that takeover happens, and they add Kane and De Jong as two aces to the pack, after a lean decade the title could be heading back to Manchester United.’

United take on Leicester City on Sunday before Thursday’s second leg clash against Barcelona following yesterday’s thrilling 2-2 draw.

They then head to Wembley to take on Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
