Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack claims he has appointed a chief executive with ‘his finger firmly on the pulse of the Scottish game’ in former Motherwell CEO Alan Burrows.
Well fan Burrows announced last month that he would be leaving Fir Park after more than 15 years working for the club – almost nine of them as CEO having joined as media officer.
The 40-year-old will join the Dons on February 27, with the Pittodrie club still searching for a new boss following the sacking of Jim Goodwin.
Youth coach Barry Robson has been put in temporary charge, but former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has thrown his hat in the ring, boldly claiming he could ‘break the Old Firm’s stranglehold’ on the title.
Cormack revealed he is set for a less hands-on role with Burrows’ arrival. In a statement, he said: ‘Alan has all the experience and qualities you’d look for in a chief executive.
‘He’s got his finger firmly on the pulse of the Scottish game, is well respected in footballing circles and is fully aligned with the strategy and vision we have to drive Aberdeen forward.’
Burrows admitted: ‘When I decided to step down from my role at Motherwell, I was fortunate enough to have a number of clubs make contact with me. However, I was most intrigued by Aberdeen, as there is so much potential at this club and so many exciting projects already well under way.
‘There is much to do, on and off the pitch, and I am excited and eager to work with the many talented staff who I know are in place at Pittodrie.’
Meanwhile, former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder is reported to have rejected an approach by the Dons to replace Goodwin, but Yorke admitted he would welcome the opportunity.
In an interview for OLBG, Yorke said: ‘Aberdeen are a big club with a great history, they had arguably the greatest manager in English (football) history, Sir Alex Ferguson.
‘It’s a privilege to be linked to a club like Aberdeen. Whether anything will materialise, that’s a different story.
‘We know Celtic and Rangers have had a stranglehold over the league for years and no one has been able to break that hold. There is a good opportunity for me to break that hold in the right setting with the right backing.’
