The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission has stated that the
various changes occurred in the socioeconomic indicators and other variables in the country has called for the review of the remuneration of the public servants in Nigeria.
The commission also said the ongoing efforts to review the remuneration package was aimed at closing the gap in salary disparity existing among them across the country.
The Chairman of the Commission, Muhammed Shehu, stated this in Akure, the Ondo state capital, at the opening of a one-day South-West zonal public hearing on the Review of Remuneration Package for the Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders in the country.
The programme was organised by the commission.
Represented by a member of the commission, Tokunbo Ajasin, the chairman mentioned the public servants who would benefit from the review package, who included the president, vice president, governors, deputy governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices mentioned in sections 84 and 124 of this constitution.
Bello, however, noted that the review did not necessarily mean that the remuneration of the beneficiaries would be increased but explaining that the exercise would be fair and just.
He said, “Permit me to clear the impression in the mind of majority of the Nigerian general public about this review exercise. Many have the belief that by the review exercise, the commission is going to increase the salaries and allowances of political and public office holders.
“By way of definition, review refers to an act of examining, or the state of being examined. Accordingly. the commission is examining the existing remuneration package for political, public and judicial office holders in the country in the face of the public outcry and changing realities in the economy.
“May I therefore, assure the Nigerian public that this review exercise is going to be fair, just and equitable in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
