A sex worker, identified simply as Chisom, has been found dead in her room in a hotel in Onitsha, Anambra State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased was found dead on Monday while cleaners swept her room.

The incident created confusion in the area as residents gathered around the scene to discuss it.

While some suspected she was murdered, others believed the deceased committed suicide.

A source, who saw the corpse before it was removed around 2.10pm, argued that the positioning of the body suggested that Chisom was strangled.

Another source and a colleague of the deceased said she might have been strangled by an early caller.

She noted that the sex worker had a disagreement with a customer the previous week, who allegedly paid her but she refused to give him access, as the latter threatened to deal with her.

A 70-year-old woman living around the hotel, identified as Mama Chizoba, disclosed that sex workers collected between N5,000 and N7000 depending on the class of customers.

She wondered why the proprietors of the hotel allowed other sex workers to take their personal belongings and flee the facility when the matter had not been fully investigated.

She dismissed claims that the deceased hanged herself, saying all the call girls in the hotel had questions to answer.

She said, “It is painful that this kind of death will happen in a notorious hotel like this and the proprietors will allow the prostitutes living there to be vacating the hotel in broad daylight when the corpse of their colleague they claimed hanged herself has not been removed and investigated. Why are they running? How can somebody who hanged herself be standing with her legs touching the floor?”

The police from the Central Police Station, Onitsha, who visited the scene around12.30pm, left with some officials of the hotel, who later returned.

Shortly after, an ambulance from the General Hospital, Onitsha, arrived and took the body away.

The Divisional Police Officer, Central Police Station, Onitsha, Ifeanyi Ibru, said investigations had commenced into the matter.

“The police are aware and we are investigating the case; the corpse has been taken away,” Ibru added.
