Over 500,000 residents in Odo-Ona Elewe, Ashipa, Eleburu off Akala Expressway in Ibadan are virtually living without electricity in the past five months. Same in various parts of the city.

The situation became worse during  the Christmas festivities and still continues till new year without no visible explanation from Ibadan   Electricity Distribution Company (DISCO) .

The newspot correspondents that went round came back with tales of anguish and frustrations from residents of these areas.

Madam Felicia Adewumi from Ashipa said: ” We are back to stone age era.. Am 70 years old . I now cook with firewood,  device old ways to get light when it is dark . ”

Mr Godwin Uche from Tipper Garage at Odo – Ona Elewe said: ” The IBEDC to me is not existing in this our area. For over six months no spark of Electricity.  The body does not bother whether there are human beings living in this area.

” We celebrated the Christmas and New Year festivities in total darkness. The most annoying part of it was in the crossover night. You won’t believe it surprisingly the light came at 12 .02 am and went off 12. 15 am.”

Mr Adesina Oluwafemi at Elebu lamented how people were suffering: ” It looks as if the citizens of this country are under a spell. You see everyone just moving aimlessly scrambling for survival. No light, no potable water. Fuel is becoming rare commodity.  Prices of fuel keep changing by the day. Almost all the filling stations in Ibadan now sell fuel between N270 and N300 and no one is complaining. Nawa ooo.”.

This situation according to our investigation started over a year ago.

Six months ago a report  published below came from Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) . Please read:

“The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has described Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (DISCO) as the worst-performing DisCo, according to the Performance Assessment review conducted in December 2021.

“The reaction from BPE follows the need to clarify some issues regarding the insinuations and statements emanating from some of the DisCos that were recently restructured following the collaterised shares of some of the DisCos.

“This was made known in a press statement issued by the Director-General of the BPE, Alex Okoh, who also said that the performance of Benin, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna DisCos have been abysmal.

“Ibadan is the worst performing DISCO as per the Performance Assessment review conducted in December 2021. Ibadan DISCO has actually retrogressed in terms of their critical performance parameters as contracted in the Performance Agreement signed with the Bureau. In fact, the DISCO under the management of the Core Investor, Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Limited (IEDM), has performed worse than before it was privatized,” Okoh stated.
