• Directs police on ‘strongest possible action’

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, directed the Nigeria Police Force to take “the strongest possible action” against the remanded policemen who reportedly shot and killed a Lagos-based lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem.

He also assured the deceased’s family and members of the Nigerian Bar Association that justice would prevail.

“I assure that justice will be done in this case,” the President said in a statement signed by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, titled ‘President Buhari condemns killing of Omobolanle Raheem, says justice must be done.’

The PUNCH reports that Raheem was returning from an eatery with some family members on Christmas Day and had tried to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when a cop shot at her vehicle.

The 41-year-old was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead. She was seven-month pregnant.

Describing the killing as “heinous and senseless,” Buhari said he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the brutal killing and directed the police authorities to take “the strongest possible action” against the culprits already held in detention.

The President said this incident was a stark reminder of the recurring menace of the mishandling of weapons and a wakeup call to law enforcement agencies, including the Police, to ensure the full implementation of reforms instituted by the regime on the subject of weapons handling as well as the protection of the rights of citizens.
