Rehan Ahmed has been left out of England’s squad for the Test series against New Zealand in February.

Ahmed, 18, became the youngest man to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut during England’s historic series win in Pakistan.

But the Leicestershire all-rounder will not feature for England in New Zealand, instead playing in the UAE T20 League in January with a view to joining up with England’s white-ball team in Bangladesh in March.

Stuart Broad, who has taken 566 Test wickets, missed England’s tour of Pakistan following the birth of his first child but will return in the two-match series in New Zealand.

The first Test begins in Tauranga on February 16, with Wellington hosting the second match on February 23.

Mark Wood is another notable absentee but Durham bowler Matthew Potts and Essex batter Dan Lawrence have been recalled, having both missed the Pakistan series.

Ben Stokes (Durham capt.), James Anderson (Lancashire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Will Jacks (Surrey), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Olly Stone (Nottinghamshire)

Jonny Bairstow is still sidelined as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken leg, while Liam Livingstone misses out after leaving the Pakistan tour early due to a knee injury.

England have secured nine wins from 10 Tests under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. As well as facing New Zealand in 2023, they play a one-off Test against Ireland before a home Ashes series against Australia.

New Zealand, meanwhile, will have a new captain when they welcome England in February after Tim Southee replaced Kane Williamson in the role.

‘It’s been a surreal few days and it’s just a massive honour to be appointed as Test captain,’ Southee said following his appointment. ‘I love Test cricket, it’s the ultimate challenge and I’m really excited by the opportunity to lead the team in this format.’
