Fred Vasseur has officially left Alfa Romeo to become Ferrari’s new team principal for 2023, replacing Mattia Binotto.

Binotto’s departure from Ferrari was confirmed in November after weeks of speculation surrounding his future following a hugely disappointing season.

Despite possessing the fastest car on the grid for the first-half of 2022, Charles Leclerc’s title challenge fell apart thanks to a number of strategy blunders and reliability problems.

As a result, Max Verstappen and Red Bull were able to cruise to both championships, while Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr.’s relationship with Binotto reportedly grew increasingly more strained.

As soon as Binotto’s resignation was confirmed, Vasseur was heavily linked with taking over at the Scuderia, with his hiring officially confirmed on Tuesday.

‘I am truly delighted and honoured to take over the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari,’ the 54-year-old Frenchman said.

‘As someone who has always held a lifelong passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the very pinnacle of the racing world to me.

‘I look forward to working with the talented and truly passionate team in Maranello to honour the history and heritage of the Scuderia and deliver for our Tifosi around the world.’

Vasseur rose to prominence in Formula One in 2016 when he became the boss of Renault, now known as Alpine, before joining the Sauber team, currently known as Alfa Romeo for sponsorship reasons, the following year.

During his time in charge he handed Leclerc his F1 debut and in 2022 Alfa Romeo finished sixth in the championship, their best result for a decade with lead driver Valtteri Bottas finishing an impressive 10th in the standings.

As for who might replace Vasseur, McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl has been surprisingly linked with the job, having overseen McLaren’s rise back to competitiveness since 2019.

In other news, on Monday night Williams announced the shock departure of team principal Jost Capito after just two years in charge of the British team.
