Wilton Sampaio, the much criticised referee that officiated England’s quarter-final defeat to France, could be given the World Cup final.

The Brazilian came in for fierce criticism for his performance during the Three Lions’ 2-1 loss to the World Champions in Doha on Saturday.

England were awarded two penalties during the defeat, with Harry Kane scoring one and missing the other.

However, Sampaio overlooked a foul on Bukayo Saka before France’s opener and waved away calls for another England penalty.

A host of referees, including the Premier League’s Michael Oliver, have been sent home before the semi-finals.

However, Sampaio has been kept on, meaning he could officiate the World Cup final next Sunday,

Harry Maguire, the Manchester United captain, was one of the most vocal critics of the referre’s performance in the defeat.

‘I can’t really explain his performance — the number of decisions he got wrong was actually incredible. Really poor,’ said Maguire.

Gary Neville agreed, saying: ‘He had an absolute nightmare. People will say it’s excuses, but he was just bad.’
