Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has claimed Gareth Southgate let England supporters down’ during their semi-final clash with France in Qatar 2022 World Cup.
England was dumped out of the tournament on Saturday following a 2-1 defeat to France.
Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot in the second half to cancel out Aurelien Tchouameni’s first-half strike but Olivier Giroud headed home Antoine Griezmann’s superb cross fifteen minutes to full time to settle the affair.
England had a golden chance to send the match into extra time but Kane ballooned the ball over the bar.
Ferdinand believes Southgate ‘came up short’ tactically against France and the coach did not bring in fresh legs until Giroud’s late goal.
“Our substitutions is where I think Gareth Southgate let us down,” Rio Ferdinand told Vibe with Five.
“I think he’s been pitch-perfect, touch-perfect in almost every decision he’s made up to this point.
“Gareth Southgate came up short in the tactical element in terms of substitutions.”
