The Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi has urged graduating students at Dominican University, Ibadan, Oyo State, to play active roles in building the country.
Obi, who stated this at the first and second convocations of the university in a video posted on Twitter by one of his supporters, omoelerinjare, on Saturday, urged them to be patriotic.
The former Anambra State governor, who is also the pro-chancellor of the university, said Nigeria remained their home irrespective of their aspirations to relocate to other countries.
The presidential candidate who apologised to the students for arriving late said he had to pay his respects to the Olubadan before coming to the school. Nevertheless, he described the students as the “most important people in my life.”
“The greatest investment a country can do is to invest in education. Some of us were once like you and I urge you to be a good ambassador of Dominican University and Nigeria.
“The important capital you need is education. With this, you can become anything globally. You can change the world and you can go anywhere,” he said.
Obi added, “I urge you to become a good ambassador of Dominican University and Nigeria. You have no other country except this one. Anywhere you live in the world, you know how they refer to you. They will say Nigerian-American, not Black American, or he is Nigerian but he is British. They must say where you are coming from before they add the new place where you are living.
“I have lived in the UK and have associated with the best in the UK, and it is a degree like this that you earn that I used to go all over the world. One thing I have found out is that they say that he (Obi) is Nigerian and residing in the UK. They must say the country where I am coming from. So, you can help us to build our country. We must make it work.”
