Sergio Aguero clashed with Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst during the tunnel spat involving Lionel Messi after Argentina’s quarter-final victory at the World Cup.

Argentina booked their place in the World Cup semi final on Friday evening following a dramatic penalty shootout after Netherlands had scored two late goals to force extra time.

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz also set a new World Cup record by handing out 17 yellow cards during the ill-tempered game, while Denzel Dumfries was sent off in the aftermath of Netherlands’ defeat.

Messi, meanwhile, was seen goading Louis van Gaal on the touchline after the game and later accused the Netherlands head coach of ‘disrespecting’ Argentina with his pre-match comments.

Messi was also involved in a verbal altercation with Weghorst in the tunnel and during his post-match interview Argentina’s talisman told the Netherlands striker: ‘Who are you looking at you fool, you look dumb, keep walking fool.’

Subsequent footage from the tunnel has revealed that Weghorst was waiting to shake Messi’s hand, however, Argentina’s players and some of their backroom staff were blocking his path.

Aguero then told Weghorst to ‘shut up’, to which the Netherlands striker replied: ‘Don’t tell me to shut up. I was waiting for him, the only thing I wanted to do is give him my hand. You do it like this? Okay, it’s not respectful.’

Speaking to the media after the incident, Weghorst said: ‘I wanted to give him a hand after the match, but he smashed my hand away and didn’t want to speak with me.

‘My Spanish is not good, but they were not respectful words. So it was really disappointing.’

#Messi, meanwhile, also took aim at Van Gaal’s tactics after Netherlands’ World Cup exit.

‘Van Gaal sells that he plays good football and then he puts forwards in the box and starts throwing long balls,’ Messi said.

‘We deserved to go through and that’s what happened.’
