While they exited Qatar 2022 in the round of 16 at the hands of the Netherlands, the USA put on a good show at the tournament, beating Iran and earning draws with Wales and England.
During the group stage they looked especially strong defensively, with Gareth Bale’s penalty the only goal conceded in those three games.
McKennie played a big part in their success, with the box-to-box midfielder earning plenty of praise and improving his already strong reputation that has been built up through his time at Schalke and Juventus.
He lifted the Coppa Italia in 2021, and to date has won 41 caps and scored nine goals for his country.
While he has played well in Turin, he has not been able to establish himself as a guaranteed starter in Massimiliano Allegri’s side, and as such the 24-year-old has been, for some time now, been linked with a move to the Premier League.
Chelsea and Tottenham may look to reignite their interest therefore, with Calciomercato reporting that Juventus are willing to sell McKennie when the transfer window reopens and will accept offers of around €30million (£25.7m).
However, both London clubs will face stiff competition for his signature, with the report also claiming that the player’s representative have already spoken to Borussia Dortmund and Aston Villa.
Both the Blues and Spurs are keen on new midfielders, while the latter more closely linked with McKennie thanks to Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici’s close ties to Juventus and preference for signing Serie A stars.
Former USA and Spurs goalkeeper Brad Friedel certainly believes McKennie would thrive in north London, telling Online Casino back in November: ‘He’s the best central midfielder the US has ever had.
‘If the finances work then Tottenham should definitely be in for McKennie. Against England he showed his quality and I think he’d be a brilliant addition for any big side in Europe.’
